Thirteen year old Santiago is a young teen going through some trouble some times in his small village in Guatimalla.  Santiago is not rich.  He is about as poor as you can be, but still be able to survive.  He works up at the fields picking Maize for his uncle when soldiers come and attack his village.  Santiago and his sister must make it to America before they are killed too.
