Day of Tears by Julius Lester

Emma is a slave of Pierce Butler and takes care of his two daughters. Pierce is a gambler who has lost most of his money and needs to sell his slaves so he can keep his plantation.  He hosts one of the biggest slave auctions in American history.

This wonderful( but hearbreaking) historical fiction novel is told in many voices by slaves, slaveowners,  free blacks  and abolitionists.
